Kortz: House of Representatives Scholarship opportunity
Applications open for high school seniors
HARRISBURG, Jan. 12 – State Rep. Bill Kortz, D-Allegheny, said applications for the 2010-11 Pennsylvania House of Representatives Scholarship are now available online.
"I encourage all eligible high school seniors to take advantage of this opportunity," Kortz said. "Higher education can be a daunting expense, and every dollar helps."
The scholarship is open to college-bound high school seniors who plan to attend a Pennsylvania college, university or career school full time. To qualify, students must have a 3.0 grade-point average, display leadership and commitment to their community, and exhibit financial need. Applicants are also scored based on an essay on the following topic: William Penn’s role in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and its representative government.
The deadline to apply is March 1. Online applications are available at www.pahousescholarship.com.
The scholarship amount is the equivalent of one semester's tuition at a State System of Higher Education university – about $2,500. However, recipients may use the scholarship at any Pennsylvania public or private university or career school. The scholarship may be renewed for each of a student's four years of undergraduate study.
Students who receive the scholarship also may be eligible to receive matching funds from SAGE Scholars Inc. and the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency’s PATH Program.
The House Scholarship is privately funded by individual and corporate donations. No tax dollars or other public funds are used.
