Kortz secures, presents state grants for West Mifflin

HARRISBURG, Jan. 15 – State Rep. Bill Kortz, D-Allegheny, has secured two state grants for West Mifflin, located in the 38th Legislative District, and will present the money to borough council tonight, Tuesday, Jan. 15 during its monthly meeting.

The two grants Kortz was able to secure for the borough include $15,000 for the purchase of 15 Mark 26 tasers for the West Mifflin Police Department. Kortz said Police Chief Popovich requested the tasers for the officers in his department.

“I think it’s imperative we arm our public defenders with the best tools for enforcing the law,” Kortz said. “Chief Popovich came to me and asked how I could help do that, and I’m proud to say I was able to secure the money the department needed.”

Kortz also helped to secure $5,000 which will go toward the rehabilitation of and equipment for West Mifflin’s Clover Lane Playground. Two local officials collaborated on the effort.

“A good, safe place for our children to play means so much these days,” Kortz said. “Councilman Rege Stevenson and Street Commissioner Jim Hess want to provide just that for our kids, and I’m so glad I could help with accomplishing that goal.”
