Kortz reminding students, families to apply for financial aid
DRAVOSBURG, Dec. 28 – State Rep. Bill Kortz, D-Allegheny, is reminding students to begin preparing their 2008 Free Application for Federal Student Aid if they plan on attending college or are continuing their higher education next year,
The application can be submitted beginning Jan. 1 for the 2008-09 academic year.
Students applying for need-based financial aid programs, including the Pennsylvania State Grant, Federal Pell Grant and federal guaranteed student loans, must complete a FAFSA, Kortz said.
Students can file a FAFSA online at www.pheaa.org/fafsa, or paper forms are available by contacting the U.S. Department of Education at 1-800-433-3243.
“The FAFSA is the link between students and the financial aid that can help them make the investment in higher education,” Kortz said. “As tuitions increase at colleges and universities, grants and low-interest loans become necessary for many students.
“It is a good idea to complete and submit the application as soon as possible after January 1.”
For students hoping to qualify for the Pennsylvania State Grant, May 1 is the deadline for those applying to colleges, universities, college-transferable programs and all renewal students. For first-time students applying to business, trade, technical and nursing schools, or a two-year terminal program at a community, junior or four-year college, the deadline is Aug. 1.
For more information, students should visit the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency’s Web site, www.pheaa.org, or call PHEAA at 1-800-692-7392.
