Levdansky honors 140 World War II veterans at medal ceremony

ELIZABETH, Oct. 10 – State Rep. David Levdansky, D-Allegheny/Washington, recently honored 140 World War II veterans at the Broughton Volunteer Fire Department in the 39th Legislative District for their wartime service.

"I am pleased that so many World War II veterans turned out for the event," Levdansky said. "These veterans did not hesitate to take up the fight in Europe and the Far East when our country needed them. After the war they returned and helped build our nation into a world power.

"We owe them a tremendous debt, and I held this event to let them know their service is not forgotten, but still honored today."

Veterans who attended the ceremony received a Pennsylvania medal of honor and a special citation from the House of Representatives. Veterans were joined by their families and the general public.

The presentation and retiring of the colors was performed for the ceremony by the Mon Valley Honor Guard and Firing Squad, which moved outdoors after the event to fire a rifle salute and play taps in honor of deceased veterans. The national anthem and "God Bless America" were performed by Linda Walsack. Former state Rep. Tom Michlovic served as master of ceremonies.

"I feel particularly honored to have had the opportunity to present Pennsylvania medals of honor and citations from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to so many brave men and women who answered the call of our country in time of war," Levdansky added.
