Smith to host Older and Wiser program in January

Seminar will provide seniors with information on fraud protection

MT. LEBANON, Dec. 14 – State Rep. Matt Smith, D-Allegheny, will host an Older and Wiser program at 1 p.m. on Jan. 22 at the Mt. Lebanon Public Library, 16 Castle Shannon Blvd. in Mt. Lebanon.

The program, presented by Neighborhood Legal Services Association, will provide information to seniors on how to avoid fraud, scams, predatory loans and identity theft.

Smith said these scams can ruin credit and put seniors, many of whom are on a fixed income, at risk. Seniors will also learn how to spot such schemes, what common methods are used by con-artists, and what actions they can take should they become victims of these types of fraud and theft.

"With more seniors using the Internet, a section on Internet phishing scams has been added," Smith said. "We'll also hear how you can detect if you are at risk for possibly providing your personal information to unsavory sources.

"I want to make sure our area seniors have this vital information to protect themselves against financial predators. This program gives them the know-how to spot a scam and the tools to prevent one."

Seniors interested in attending should contact Smith’s district office at 412-571-2169 for more information and to register.
