Reps. Smith & Kotik bring $125,000 to Scott Township
MT. LEBANON, Jan. 24 – State Reps. Matt Smith, D-Allegheny, and Nick Kotik, D-Allegheny, delivered two grants Tuesday to help Scott Township upgrade Scott Park and continue its outstanding recycling efforts.
“I’m pleased to help secure this funding of more than $125,000 for Scott Township,” Smith said. “Our local officials often depend on state grants to continue serving the community. As their state representative, I will always do what I can to help bring back the financial resources needed to make our neighborhoods great places to live.”
Smith and Kotik joined together Tuesday evening to deliver $105,500 for Scott Park. Smith said $50,000 will be used to develop a plan to expand the park by 71 acres. The other $55,500 will be used to further develop the park’s facilities, including a new basketball court and amphitheatre, landscaping, fencing and other upgrades. Smith secured the funding through the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
“Residents of Scott Township and surrounding neighborhoods will see great enhancements to Scott Park in terms of what it has to offer because of this funding,” Kotik said. “Also, the additional funding we presented for the township’s recycling efforts shows how much can be accomplished with just a little bit of everyone’s help. I am proud to give them something in return.”
The two lawmakers also presented Scott Township a $20,127 recycling performance grant as a result of recycling efforts in 2005. That year, the township collected and recycled an impressive 1,358 tons of waste that would otherwise have gone to landfills. Smith helped the township obtain the grant through the state Department of Environmental Protection’s Recycling Performance Grant program, which helps maintain and improve local recycling programs that spur economic growth and job creation.
