Smith, House designate May 11-17 as Food Allergy Awareness Week

HARRISBURG, May 7 – State Rep. Matt Smith, D-Allegheny, announced today that the state House has adopted a resolution designating the week of May 11-17 as "Food Allergy Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.

Smith sponsored the resolution (H.R. 643) to raise public awareness about the issue.

"Food allergies affect the lives of many Pennsylvanians," Smith said. "Unfortunately, food allergies and anaphylaxis can be life-threatening afflictions that cause upwards of 150 deaths each year."

The lawmaker said he hopes that greater awareness will lead more schools and restaurants to inform students and consumers about food ingredients so they can avoid potentially life-threatening situations.
