House Insurance Committee approves bill to help landslide victims
HARRISBURG, Oct. 7 – State Rep. Matt Smith, D-Allegheny, said today that the House Insurance Committee has reported out legislation that would establish a Pennsylvania Landslide Insurance and Assistance Program within the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
The legislation (H.B. 523) would create a statewide program consisting of three parts: an insurance fund; a revolving loan program, which would include a $2.5 million low interest loan fund; and a grant program to help residents with repairs.
"We have an issue with landslides in our area, and this legislation can directly aid residents in the South Hills," Smith said. "We have an opportunity to provide assistance and some peace of mind to many residents who may be impacted by landslides."
The legislation would give homeowners an opportunity to buy landslide insurance, which is not offered right now by private insurance companies.
The funding would be administered by a Pennsylvania Landslide Insurance and Assistance Board. The board members would determine insurance eligibility and coverage limits, and regulate the adjustment and settlement of claims.
The measure now goes to the full House for consideration.
