Smith comments on discharge resolution to force vote on measure to reduce size of state legislature
HARRISBURG, Oct. 15 – State Rep. Matt Smith, D-Allegheny, released a statement following today’s vote in the state House on a discharge resolution to force a floor vote on a bill (H.B. 55) to reduce the size of the legislature:
“Reducing the number of lawmakers in state government would produce a more efficient government that can better meet the needs of its citizens. This is an issue that I heard about time and time again before I was elected to office, and I made a promise then that I would work to reduce state government in Pennsylvania.
“Earlier this year, the House implemented a number of reforms after heeding the demand from the people we represent. That was a good start, but there are more changes that could be enacted to make state government more effective and efficient, which is something that my constituents are demanding.
“I am not afraid to push this issue to the forefront. I know that I have colleagues in the House who, like me, are willing to do what we believe is right, whether the idea comes from a Republican or Democratic member. That spirit of bipartisanship can be the catalyst for change for a better Pennsylvania.”
