Kotik: Grants available to help with autism services
CORAOPOLIS, Feb. 24 – State Rep. Nick Kotik, D-Allegheny, said today he is encouraging individuals and families of those with autism to apply for state grants to help defray the cost of paying for support services associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
The grants, awarded through the state Department of Public Welfare, can be up to $500 and are geared to those who do not currently qualify for existing support programs.
"Many people do not qualify for certain programs because of age restrictions or perhaps waiting lists," Kotik said. "Paying for programs and services out of pocket can be very costly. We don't want to see anyone go without the help they need because of financial barriers."
Kotik said the grants can be used for child care and respite services, summer camp, community or recreational programs, autism conferences and workshops, and safety modifications.
Funding is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
"This program helps approximately 1,000 people get the home and community-based services that are tailored to their needs," Kotik said. "That is why it is so important."
The deadline to apply for a grant is April 17. More information, including the application, is available by visiting www.autisminpa.org.
