Kotik addresses report on flood insurance awareness

HARRISBURG, March 10 – State Rep. Nick Kotik, D-Allegheny, said today the state Department of Insurance has issued its yearly report on Pennsylvania's consumer education program about available flood insurance policies.

"This allows us to see what progress is being made out in the public with regard to purchasing and maintaining flood insurance," Kotik said. "It is of particular importance to the residents of Allegheny County, considering the devastation we've suffered in recent years due to heavy flooding."

According to the report, insured flood losses were more than $337 million in Pennsylvania during the past five flood seasons. In addition, the state received the second highest total claim payments in the nation prior to the 2004 hurricane season.

"Severe flooding causes physical and financial havoc," Kotik said. "I commend the department for being at the forefront in its efforts to encourage consumers to purchase flood insurance or maintain a current policy.

"The department also closely monitors all insurance questions and concerns which help enhance their consumer outreach efforts."

Kotik said the department will extend its consumer education program in 2010 through outreach events, publications and local media relations.
