Kotik: apply for property tax/rent rebates
CARAOPOLIS, June 6 – State Rep. Nick Kotik, D-Allegheny, is reminding seniors and others who qualify that the deadline to apply for this year’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program is June 30.
“The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program has been expanded to include more seniors than previous years,” Kotik said. “If you haven’t qualified in the past, be sure to contact my constituent service office to find out if the new guidelines include you.”
Under the new eligibility requirements, household income for homeowners cannot exceed $35,000, while the income limit for renters remains at $15,000. However, both homeowners and renters can leave out half their Social Security or federal railroad retirement benefits when calculating income, and both qualify for the higher $650 maximum rebate.
In addition to expanded eligibility, the maximum rebate amount for both homeowners and renters has risen from $500 to $650. To qualify for the program, residents must be 65 or older, a widow or widower 50 or older, or 18 or older with a permanent disability.
Homeowners and renters who received a rebate last year should have already received this year’s application in the mail. Those who have not applied previously or who need help with their application should contact one of Kotik’s constituent service offices in Coraopolis at 412-264-4260 or Carnegie at 412-429-5091.
