October 2009

LEGISLATIVE ROUNDUP

With one of the largest populations of senior citizens in the country, the Commonwealth prides itself in offering top-quality services and programs to Pennsylvania's elderly residents.

I would like to extend a personal invitation to the public to attend my upcoming Senior Fair Thursday, Oct. 15.

The fair will be a one-stop shop where seniors can get lots of valuable information from many organizations.

Vendors and organizations will be there helping seniors with everything from PACE and free health screenings to application assistance for federal, state and local programs. Representatives from state agencies will be available to answer questions and help with paperwork for programs like Property Tax/Rent Rebate or with PennDOT work.

The Senior Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15 at River Rocks Bingo Hall, 18 Furnace St. Extension in McKees Rocks.

In addition to light refreshments, door prizes and free parking, seasonal flu shots will be available with a valid Medicare card or for $28.

Just as the state is one of the leaders in senior population, Allegheny County has one of the largest senior populations in the Commonwealth. That is why I am co-hosting this senior health expo with my colleagues state Reps. Dan Deasy and Robert Matzie, who also represent portions of Allegheny County. We are working to ensure that we are addressing the health, wellness and unique needs of our seniors as well as address their concerns associated with state government.

We will also be joined by Allegheny County Treasurer John Weinstein and his staff to answer questions about county property tax exemptions and the homestead exemption program.

As a preview, representatives from the following agencies will be on hand to offer their assistance: AARP, Allegheny County Department of Human Services, CONTACT Pittsburgh, Highmark Inc., Port Authority of Pittsburgh, Public Utility Commission, Sto-Rox Neighborhood Health Center and many more.
