Kotik: Dec. 31 deadline for property tax or rent rebates applications is near

CORAOPOLIS, Dec. 7 – State Rep. Nick Kotik, D-Allegheny, said today the deadline to apply for a 2006 property tax or rent rebate under the state’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program is Dec. 31.

“Hundreds of thousands of people across Pennsylvania still need to apply. They qualify for a rebate,” Kotik said. “In Allegheny County alone, at least 18,000 people who qualify still need to apply.

“More people than ever before, especially senior citizens, are eligible for a property tax or rent rebate and this application process is the first and most important step in getting money back.”

Kotik said the program, which is funded by the state lottery, is open to senior citizens 65 or older, widows or widowers 50 or older, and residents 18 or older with a permanent disability. For homeowners, the household income eligibility limit has been expanded to $35,000. For renters, the household income limit is $15,000. However, applicants only have to include half of their Social Security, Supplemental Security or federal railroad retirement Tier 1 benefits when figuring their income levels.

“Many people who qualify can receive a maximum rebate of up to $650 or a minimum rebate of $250 on their property tax or rent paid during last year,” Kotik said. “This is money that is there to help; it is money that can make a big difference, so I urge to you to find out if you’re eligible as soon as possible.”

The Allegheny County legislator said residents who have questions about the program or who need assistance with the application may contact either of his constituent services offices: 1350 Fifth Ave. in Coraopolis, 412-264-4260; or 115 E. Main St. in Carnegie, 412-429-5091.
