White: Public meetings will be held on gaming revenue project applications

CECIL, Jan. 11 – State Rep. Jesse White, D-Washington/Allegheny/Beaver, announced that the public will be invited to attend informational hearings regarding the distribution of Washington County’s local share of the state’s slots gaming revenue. The county received $88 million in grant requests for the roughly $8 million expected to be available for various projects in the area.

White, who is the legislative appointee to the Washington County Economic Development Roundtable for the purpose of reviewing the applications, said there will be special hearings during which the 85 applicants for the funding will have an opportunity to expand on their applications and answer questions from the review panel. These hearings will be open to the public.

“It is essential to solicit information on these projects in a public forum,” White said. “The more the public knows about what the possibilities are for the gaming funds, the better off everyone will be. I believe that once we start asking some serious questions about the viability of some of these projects, the cream will rise to the top.

“I look forward to these hearings and I am confident that they will be beneficial to the entire process.”

The roundtable group reviews the applicants and sends the applications to the county commissioners. The commissioners then select the final group and send the applications to the state Department of Community and Economic Development for approval.

Meeting dates and times are not yet available.
