House adopts Solobay resolution making June 2008 Foster Grandparent Program Month
HARRISBURG, June 4 – The Pennsylvania House of Representatives recognized the contributions of the Foster Grandparent Program and its volunteers in the Commonwealth by adopting a resolution (H.R. 765) designating the month of June 2008 as "Foster Grandparent Program Month."
The resolution was sponsored by state Rep. Tim Solobay, D-Washington. "This is a way to show our appreciation to the volunteers who help in the program every year," Solobay said. "With the House members all in agreement on this resolution, it demonstrates how thankful we are for their contributions."
The Foster Grandparent Program offers seniors 60 and older opportunities to serve as mentors and tutors for children and youth with special needs. The program allows seniors to serve in a variety of settings including hospital, youth centers and schools. There are more than 300 programs which serve young people in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
The program has about 31,000 volunteers who serve more than 1 million children and youth annually and is part of the Senior Corps, which also includes the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and the Senior Companion program.
