Solobay votes to reject cuts in Republicans’ budget bill
HARRISBURG, July 2 – The House of Representatives Saturday night voted down a Senate version of the state budget bill. State Rep. Tim Solobay, D-Washington, released the following statement on his vote to reject the Senate’s budget bill:
“The Republican-controlled Senate sent us a bill that would be bad for education and drive up people’s property taxes.
“The House Democratic budget bill would increase funding for our schools – without a state tax increase. The Senate removed millions from education, which would leave local property owners to pick up more of the public education tab.
“The Senate removed millions from important job training programs that help to keep people off the welfare rolls. Cutting that program is going to pull the rug right out from under people who are trying to move from welfare and unemployment to work.
“The Senate removed millions for our public libraries, and millions from vital health-care programs. The Senate’s bare-bones budget would result in more taxes for Pennsylvanians.”
A conference committee will now be charged with the task of hashing out a compromise spending plan.
