House Commerce Committee to hold hearing in Windber

Topic: Economic Development and Job Creation

HARRISBURG, Jan. 21 – The Pennsylvania House Commerce Committee will hold the first in a series of several public hearings on economic development from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28 at the Arcadia Performing Arts Theatre, Windber.

Commerce Committee Chairman, state Rep. Peter J. Daley, D-Washington/Fayette, said the premise of this series of hearings is: Economic Development and Job Creation.

"As we begin 2010 and a new decade, it is imperative to focus on ways to stimulate economic development and more importantly, job creation," said Daley. "With unemployment at an all-time high, we cannot continue to sit back and watch as fewer and fewer jobs become available. We must be proactive in the search to explore how we can create and retain jobs at state and local levels."

"I am pleased that the Commerce Committee has chosen our region as the first host of this very important series of economic development hearings," said Rep. Frank Burns, D-Cambria/Somerset. "With unemployment rates of 8 and 9 percent in Cambria and Somerset counties, respectively, it’s vital that we explore our options and opportunities for job creation."

"One of our goals in requesting this first hearing is to assess the needs on a local level to develop support job creation and build an even more robust economy," Daley said.

Subsequent hearings will follow throughout the year in other regions of the state. The second hearing in the series will be in held in Scranton in February.

Daley said he believes that successful economic development is a locally driven process and hopes that this series of hearings provide the opportunity to develop comprehensive strategies that will serve as a solution to the state’s economic development and job creation problems.
