House Commerce Committee to hold hearing in Scranton

Topic: Economic Development and Job Creation

HARRISBURG, Feb. 4 – The Pennsylvania House Commerce Committee will hold the second in a series of several public hearings on economic development from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11 in The Rose Room of Brennan Hall at the University of Scranton.

Rep. James Wansacz, D-Lackawanna, chairman of the committee’s Subcommittee on Small Business, said the premise of Thursday's hearing is economic development and job creation.

"The economic system has been marked by continuous change, and we continue in a deep recession that has affected many different facets of growth in Pennsylvania," said Rep. Peter J. Daley, chairman of the Commerce Committee. "It is critical that we work to identify our goal to get the system back on track and revitalize economic activity and spur job creation."

Wansacz said he is pleased that Daley and the House Commerce Committee are bringing this hearing to the northeast region.

"My legislative district has a unique opportunity for job creation and economic growth through the gas drilling and gaming industries," Wansacz said. "This hearing will allow us to explore ideas about how the state can assist with those types of regional development."

"By focusing on the specific needs of each region, we can achieve a consensus on how to craft solutions for the Commonwealth," Daley said.

Subsequent hearings will follow throughout the year in other regions of the state. Last month, the committee held its first hearing of the series in the southwest in Somerset County.
