House Commerce Committee to hold hearing in Williamsport
Topic: Economic Development and Job Creation
HARRISBURG, March 4 – The Pennsylvania House Commerce Committee will hold the second in a series of several public hearings on economic development from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 11 in Mary Lindsay Welch Honors Hall, Lycoming College, Williamsport.
Commerce Committee chairman, state Rep. Peter J. Daley, D-Washington/Fayette, said the premise of this series of hearings is: Economic Development and Job Creation.
"As we struggle to regain hope through the worst recession in decades, we need to take aim at putting Pennsylvanians back to work," Daley said. "Through these hearings we can begin to evaluate the sustainability of recovery and outline initiatives on how to create jobs of the future, jobs that pay well and jobs that can’t be outsourced."
"The unemployment rate in the Williamsport area reached 9.8 percent in December. We need to make the type of investments that will spur economic development and create jobs in rural communities," said state Rep. Rick Mirabito, D-Lycoming, who is co-hosting the March 11 hearing. "I want to thank Chairman Daley for bringing this hearing to Williamsport so we can have a local dialogue on how best to address the employment challenges we are facing."
Subsequent hearings will follow throughout the year in other regions of the state. In January, the committee held its first hearing of the series in the southwest in Somerset County.
"By focusing on the specific needs of each region, we can achieve a consensus on how to craft solutions for the Commonwealth," Daley said
