DeWeese reacts to Quinnipiac poll;

Reminds voters of House accomplishments

HARRISBURG, Aug. 5 – House Majority Leader Bill DeWeese issued the following statement regarding the recently released Quinnipiac University poll:

"I respect the opinions reflected in this poll.  Clearly we need to do a better job of educating voters about the dozens of meaningful legislative and administrative reforms that we implemented this session, including the successful enactment of legislation that:

·         provides the largest increase in basic education funding in 20 years;

·         hastens the shift to clean, renewable, domestically produced fuels, creates jobs in Pennsylvania, and reduces the state's dependence on foreign sources of oil;

·         makes an historic investment in the state's infrastructure that will provide up to $1.2 billion in new investments to ensure safe, clean water and safer communities;

·         guarantees insurance coverage for children who have autism;

·         protects miners with the strongest mine safety law in the country;

·         protects seniors in Pennsylvania's PACE and PACENET programs by ensuring that they do not lose their prescription drug coverage due to Social Security cost-of-living adjustments;

·         improves access to health care by expanding scope of practice responsibilities of health care professionals;

·         provides meaningful mortgage reform;

·         implements a statewide smoking ban; and

·         creates a new Open Records Law that for the first time includes the General Assembly.

Furthermore, I led the creation of a Speaker’s Reform Commission, then supported the implementation of 32 new rules that brought transparency to the operations of the House chamber.  At the same time, I implemented dozens of internal caucus reforms.  We are now the only legislative caucus to have implemented a strong Code of Conduct, a Compliance & Ethics program, and other significant financial and personnel controls.

We now will focus on informing Pennsylvanians about our aggressive agenda for this fall that includes health care, further implementation of our energy agenda and our continued work on reform."
