Mahoney: Stimulus payments start this May, but tax filing required
UNIONTOWN, March 17 – State Rep. Tim Mahoney, D-Fayette, announced that economic stimulus payments from the federal government will be sent to more than 130 million people beginning in May.
Mahoney said the Internal Revenue Service will automatically determine if people are eligible based on their 2007 tax returns, and will direct-deposit payments for those who select that option when filing income tax returns.
"I want to let senior citizens in my district know that they must file a 2007 tax return to receive a stimulus payment," Mahoney said. "Even if people don’t owe anything, they still might qualify for a minimum $300 payment."
The Fayette County lawmaker said eligible people will receive payments ranging from $300 to $600, and joint filers will receive payments between $600 and $1,200, depending on how much they owe in taxes.
