  Mahoney announces deadline extension

to apply for Property Tax/Rent Rebate is now Dec. 31

HARRISBURG, June 11 – State Rep. Tim Mahoney, D-Fayette, is reminding his constituents that the deadline to apply for the state's Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program is Dec. 31.

Mahoney said the program provides qualifying homeowners and renters with rebates on their 2008 property taxes or rent.

"I am encouraging senior citizens and other qualifying residents in my district to apply now to get their property tax or rent rebate," Mahoney said. "Many qualifying applicants can receive a rebate of up to $650 on their property tax or rent paid in 2008. The minimum rebate is $250 if you qualify."

Mahoney said to qualify, homeowners must have a household income of $35,000 per year or less and renters $15,000 per year or less. Homeowners and renters must also be 65 or older, a widow or widower 50 or older, or 18 or older and permanently disabled.

Only half of an applicant's Social Security or federal railroad retirement income is counted against the income limit. Rebates of up to $650 are available to those who qualify based on income and taxes or rent paid.

The Fayette County legislator said residents who have questions about the program or who need assistance with the application may contact any of his constituent services offices:
