Pallone announces grants for Westmoreland and Armstrong counties

HARRISBURG, June 11 – State Rep. John Pallone, D-Westmoreland/Armstrong, announced today that Westmoreland and Armstrong counties are receiving Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection recycling coordinator grants, and Armstrong County is also receiving a Sewage Facilities Enforcement grant.

Westmoreland's recycling coordinator grant is $18,045; Armstrong's grant is $12,092. The grants will be used to reimburse 50 percent of the county recycling coordinator's salary and expenses. A recycling coordinator administers the county's recycling programs.

"Recycling is not only important to our environment, but it is important to Pennsylvania's economy, providing more than 81,000 jobs, which is why the state must ensure recycling remains a growing, robust industry," Pallone said.

The other grant, for $96,141, is awarded to the Armstrong County Sewage Enforcement Agency and will be used to reimburse 50 percent of the eligible expenses for performing the sewage enforcement provisions of Section 7 of Act 537.

Act 537 requires municipalities, either individually or as members of multi-municipal sewage agencies, to enforce on-lot sewage system requirements, including evaluation and permitting of new systems, proper repair of malfunctioning systems and timely complaint investigations.

Pennsylvania’s recycling industry includes more than 3,240 recycling and reuse businesses and generates $18.4 billion in gross annual sales. More information about Pennsylvania’s recycling efforts is available online at www.depweb.state.pa.us.
