Dear Editor,
I am writing with expressed interest relative to the current budget debate going on in Harrisburg.
As you know, we are facing the worst economic times since the Great Depression in our country, and the worldwide recession has resulted in a $3.2 billion shortfall for our state’s budget. Let me make it perfectly clear: I AM NOT IN FAVOR OF A TAX INCREASE and will continue to fight against a tax increase while making every effort to support adequate funding for fundamental and essential programs throughout Pennsylvania.
Clearly, as stated, I am not in favor of a tax increase so please do not be fooled by the propaganda that you see, hear and read in the in the press and media. Contrary to what you hear or may believe, it isn’t the House Republicans who are blocking the tax increase. It is actually a group of strong willed House Democratic legislators, like me, known as the Blue Dog Democrats that are stopping a tax increase.
The truth of the matter is that the 97 Republican legislators cannot block a tax increase, or any other action, in the House without Democratic support because for any bill to pass, it must receive 102 affirmative votes. Republicans are five votes short.
However, on the tax increase issue, at least 20 or more House Democratic Blue Dogs, like me, will continue to stand strong and keep a tax increase from seeing the light of day. Make no mistake, there are at least 10 or more Republican House members that will vote for a tax increase, but thanks to me and the Blue Dog Democrats, the tax increase won’t happen.
I thank my constituents for allowing me to represent them in state government and, rest assured, I will continue to work in Harrisburg to hold the line on taxes, and to fight for adequate funding for necessary and important programs that benefit Pennsylvanians.
I am confident that a final budget is imminent and will provide adequate funding for fundamental and essential programs.
Sincerely,
John E. Pallone
