Pallone announces Household Pollution Prevention Grant for Armstrong County

HARRISBURG, Dec. 17 – State Rep. John Pallone, D-Westmoreland/Armstrong, today announced that Armstrong County is receiving a $1,046 Small Business and Household Pollution Prevention Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

The grant will be used to reimburse the county 50 percent of the costs of operating a household hazardous waste collection site at the Hilltop Plaza Parking Lot on Sept. 17, 2009.

"Household hazardous wastes are common products that, while not regulated as hazardous waste under federal and state laws, are hazardous in nature and should not just be thrown away with the trash or dumped down a sink because they can create environmental and public health hazards if not disposed of properly," Pallone said. "Events such as this one give residents an opportunity to dispose of these items in a way that won't cause environmental damage."

Household hazardous wastes include such items as old paint, pesticides, pool chemicals, drain cleaners, and degreasers and other car care products.

DEP estimates that each person in Pennsylvania produces an average of four pounds of household hazardous waste each year, or about 25,000 tons per year statewide.
