LIHEAP program grants increased, extended

HARRISBURG, Jan. 6 State Rep. Joe Petrarca, D-Westmoreland/Armstrong, today announced that Pennsylvania's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, also known as LIHEAP, will increase cash grant amounts by $100 and extend the program through April 2.

The federally funded LIHEAP helps income-eligible households pay for heat during the winter months and is administered by the state Department of Public Welfare. A family of four with an annual income of up to $33,075 can qualify for this assistance.

Petrarca said LIHEAP's closing date has been extended from March 15 to April 2. He added that, according to the public welfare department, cash grants for this winter are expected to average $326.

"With these updates to the LIHEAP program, an additional 80,000 households throughout Pennsylvania will receive help paying for their heat," Petrarca said. "This will provide much-needed relief to families who are struggling to make ends meet."

Petrarca said people can learn more about LIHEAP by calling his local office at (724) 567-6982.
