HARRISBURG, Jan. 15 – State Rep. Joe Petrarca, D-Westmoreland/Armstrong, announced today that Westmoreland and Armstrong counties have been awarded a total of $262,500 in state funding to plan and improve local outdoor recreation trails.
Petrarca said the Allegheny Ridge Corporation is receiving $45,000 to determine the feasibility of various trail, share the road and bike route connections for the Kiskiminetas Valley Greenway and Trails throughout Westmoreland and Armstrong counties. The funds will also be used to develop a gateway public art project and integrate the trails with the Main Street master plan in the Kiskiminetas Valley section of the Pittsburgh to Harrisburg trail.
In addition, Allegheny Township in Westmoreland County will receive $155,000 to acquire more than 10 acres to extend the Tredway Trail approximately 1.5 miles to the Butler/Freeport Bridge. And the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor will receive $62,500 to develop the Lincoln Highway Experience Museum attraction and continue to explore new public and private partnerships to enhance the national resources in the region.
These grants are awarded through the Community Conservation Partnerships Program, which is maintained by the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and funded through the state's Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund, the Growing Greener bond issues that voters have approved, and federal sources.
