Pallone, Petrarca: Armstrong County receives $171,404 in environment grants

HARRISBURG, March 5 – State Reps. John Pallone and Joe Petrarca, both D-Westmoreland/Armstrong, announced that Armstrong County has received $171,404 in Growing Greener grants.

Parks Township received $24,950 for stream bank stabilization and erosion control on Carnahan Run. The other funds went to the Armstrong Conservation District. Of the grants, $78,375 will go to remediate erosion along part of Plum Creek, while $8,229 will restore and protect a portion of Buffalo Creek.

Also, $24,850 will be used to assess 46 square miles of watersheds in the county that flow into the Allegheny River. The assessment would deal with problems such as flooding, acid mine discharge, agricultural problems, sewer overflows, and sedimentation and erosion. The final $35,000 will reclaim five acres of abandoned mine land and convert it into productive pastureland.

“These grants are important in keeping our rivers and streams clean and safe,” Pallone said.

This year, Growing Greener invested $22.3 million to fund 124 projects to clean up rivers, streams, and watershed resources across the Commonwealth.

“Growing Greener doesn’t just help our natural water sources. It protects natural areas, open spaces and working farms, along with supporting key programs to revitalize communities and improve the quality of life in Pennsylvania,” Petrarca said.
