Local school receives science education grant

HARRISBURG, July 24 – State Rep. Joe Petrarca, D-Westmoreland/Armstrong, announced that the David Leech Elementary School in the Leechburg Area School District will be receiving a grant as part of the "Science: It's Elementary" program.

Science: It’s Elementary allows school districts to invest in programs and technology that have been proven to help children succeed in elementary science classes. It provides science kits for hands-on experiments on the weather, water, balance and motion, electricity, and rocks and minerals.

"Science: It’s Elementary allows kids to do more than just watch," Petrarca said. "They can connect with what they are learning by being active and experimenting."

The expansion of the program, made possible by an appropriation of $14.5 million in the 2008-09 enacted state budget, will be implemented in 14 new school districts reaching 298 teachers and 8,242 students. Combined with funding in the previous two years, 143 elementary schools will be offered innovative science teaching in the 2008-09 school year, reaching 2,847 teachers and 66,973 students across Pennsylvania.
