Petrarca announces $76,644 in grant funding for local school districts

HARRISBURG, July 30 – State Rep. Joe Petrarca, D-Westmoreland/Armstrong, announced that five schools in his district will receive dual enrollment grant funding to help students earn both high school and college credits simultaneously.

The school districts, which combined will receive more than $76,000, are Blairsville-Saltsburg, $1,219; Derry Area, $16,242; Greater Latrobe, $41,312; Kiski Area, $11,029; and Leechburg Area, $6,842.

"Dual Enrollment is an excellent program that allows high school students to get ahead and prepares them for what college courses are like." Petrarca said. "They get the best of both worlds, preparing for college and earning high school credits at the same time."

The Dual Enrollment program enables high school juniors and seniors to enroll in college-level courses and receive postsecondary credit for coursework.

The grants for 2008-09 were awarded to 370 school districts and 16 career and technical schools throughout 64 counties, nearly three-fourths of the state's 501 school districts, and will give students access to nearly 50,000 college courses in the coming school year.
