HARRISBURG, Aug. 4 – State Rep. Joe Petrarca, D-Westmoreland/Armstrong, announced that several local school districts will receive grant funding through the state's "Classrooms for the Future" program.
The school districts, which combined will receive $467,745, are: Derry Area, $154,406; Greater Latrobe, $50,425; Kiski Area, $188,223; and Leechburg Area, $74,691. The program provides funding to purchase laptop computers, high-speed Internet access and state-of-the-art software for high school math, science, English and social studies classrooms. It also includes funding for professional development to help train teachers on the equipment. "Classrooms for the Future incorporates the same technology in classrooms that students will be using in the workplace," Petrarca said. Petrarca said educators who have used the program in their classrooms have reported increased student attendance and participation. The program has reached 350,000 students across the state in its first two years and will place 140,000 laptops in high school classrooms this year.
