Petrarca: St. Vincent College awarded $2,500 for environmental education

HARRISBURG, Aug. 13State Rep. Joe Petrarca, D-Westmoreland/Armstrong, announced that St. Vincent College in Latrobe has been awarded a $2,500 environmental education grant through the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The grant of $2,500 will be used to create and present a Bears, Bugs and Birds Ecology workshop for kindergarten through sixth-grade teachers.

"Every student should understand the environment and their relationship with it," Petrarca said. "This program will teach how we all play a role in protecting the ecology of our earth."

To date, DEP has awarded more than $6 million in grants through the Environmental Education Grant Program. Money for the grants comes from 5 percent of the pollution fines and penalties collected by DEP, Petrarca said.

The program is open to school districts, private schools, nonprofit groups and county conservation districts to help them fund new or expanded environmental education programming.
