Casorio announces recycling grant for Jeannette
HARRISBURG, May 29 – State Rep. James E. Casorio Jr., D-Westmoreland, announced today that the city of Jeannette has been awarded a $2,444 grant from the state under the Department of Environmental Protection’s Recycling Performance Grant Program.
Casorio said the grant amount is based on the more-than-290 tons of material the city recycled in 2006 and the city’s population. Recycling performance grants are awarded by DEP in addition to other funding municipalities receive from the state for recycling programs.
"Recycling has become a significant industry in Pennsylvania," Casorio said. "Pennsylvania is a national leader in recycling, and communities like Jeannette, with their recycling programs, have helped not just to improve the environment, but also help the local and state economy."
Casorio said Pennsylvania’s recycling industry includes more than 3,240 recycling and reuse businesses and organizations that generate more than $18.4 billion a year in gross sales. Recycling and related industries provide jobs for more than 81,000 Pennsylvanians and contribute more than $300 million a year to state revenues.
"Recycling is beneficial in a number of ways," Casorio said. "Recycling saves energy, reduces air and water pollution, and reduces the need to dedicate land for waste disposal. Recycling is important for the future, and it's good to see the state recognizing Jeannette for the role the city and its residents are playing in moving recycling forward."
