Pa. extends Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program deadline
HARRISBURG, June 16 – State Rep. James E. Casorio Jr., D-Westmoreland, announced that the state has extended the deadline for eligible residents to apply for a state rebate on their 2007 property taxes or rent until Dec. 31, 2008.
The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program provides state property tax or rent rebates of up to $650 to income-qualifying residents who are 65 or older, 50 or older and widowed, and 18 or older with a permanent disability. For homeowners to qualify, their household income cannot exceed $35,000. The income limit for renters is $15,000. However, Casorio reminded applicants that they only have to count half of any Social Security, Supplemental Security or federal railroad retirement Tier I benefits toward their income when applying.
Casorio also explained that many senior homeowners will receive an additional rebate amount this year. Seniors who are eligible for the program and whose income is less than $30,000 will receive an extra 50 percent on their rebate amount if they paid more than 15 percent of their income in property taxes last year. That means some senior citizens will receive rebates under the program for as much as $975.
Senior citizens and other eligible residents can get more information about the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program, applications for the program and assistance applying by contacting Casorio's local offices:
