Harhai votes for bill to honor former House speaker and Monessen native Jim Manderino
HARRISBURG, Oct. 25 – State Rep. Ted Harhai, D-Westmoreland/Fayette, said the state House of Representatives passed legislation to honor the late Jim Manderino, former House speaker and a native of Monessen. Manderino also served as representative of the 58th Legislative District, the seat now held by Harhai.
The legislation (H.B. 1192) would rename the state's Keystone Building, which houses the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and a number of other state agencies and offices in Harrisburg, as the Speaker James J. Manderino Office Building.
“I am honored to follow in Speaker Manderino’s shoes and represent the 58th District,” Harhai said. “If I can accomplish in my career half of what he accomplished during his years in the legislature, I will consider myself an effective representative of my constituents.”
Harhai succeeded Herman Mihalich, who served after Manderino’s death in December 1989.
First elected to the House of Representatives in 1966 to represent the 58th Legislative District, Manderino was elected speaker in 1989. He also served as majority whip and majority leader during his nearly quarter-century of service.
The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
