State

March 10, 2009
Dear friends and neighbors:
As your new state representative for the 70th Legislative District, I want to thank you again for the confidence you have placed in me. I am truly humbled and honored by the opportunity you have bestowed upon me -- and I appreciate your support, especially during these most trying of times in the Commonwealth.
Initially, I am excited to share with you that my staff and I have moved out of our temporary office space, and have moved into our two new Constituent Service Offices located in Worcester Township and Norristown. Not only are we fully prepared to address your constituent services needs, I am especially proud to report that the 70th Legislative District offices are now -- for the very first time -- handicap accessible. Please know that no issue is too big or too small and we will always have an open door for any issue or concern you may wish to share. Furthermore, we will be holding open houses at both of our offices on Saturday, March 28, 2009. I hope you and your family can share this special day with my family and my staff.
Additionally, I want to update you on some exiting news from Harrisburg. In a rare honor for a freshman legislator, I was selected by the speaker of the House to sit on the powerful House Appropriations Committee -- the committee which oversees much of the key spending and policy decisions of the Commonwealth. On such an influential committee, I am uniquely positioned to advocate for the interests of our community, as well as to press the issue of fiscal responsibility that I stressed so often during my campaign.
I am also proud to report, after having sat through over a month of budget hearings, that even in the face of a truly historic financial crisis, Gov. Ed Rendell's proposed budget does not rely on a broad based tax increase on business or individuals to balance the budget. Furthermore, the governor’s proposed budget would increase the Commonwealth’s investment in public education and, consequently, reduce the reliance on local property taxes. This is all very good news for the families, businesses and seniors of the 70th Legislative District.
Finally, back in the district, I have been working on the issues that I believe will most directly impact our communities. Along with Rep. Mike Vereb, R-Montgomery, as well as the relevant state, local and community leaders, I have been working with the neighbors to block Vision Quest -- a privately run juvenile detention facility with a checkered track record -- from moving into a residential neighborhood. Similarly, whether the issue is traffic or open space preservation, financing sewer improvements or mitigating the effects of the widening of the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, I am confident that, working together, we can ensure that the 70th Legislative District is well represented in Harrisburg.
Again, I want to invite you to stop by my local offices for our open houses or just to share some good news, talk about an issue, or just say hello.
With warmest regards,
Matthew D. Bradford

70th Legislative District
