Wojnaroski resolution names April Child Abuse Prevention Month
HARRISBURG, March 31 – The State House of Representatives unanimously adopted a resolution from state Rep. Edward Wojnaroski Sr, D-Cambria, that declares April as Child Abuse Prevention Month.
“Children are our future, but it’s our responsibility to protect them as they build their foundation,” Wojnaroski said. “Child abuse has far reaching, scarring effects. Our role as care providers, in whatever capacity, must be a nurturing one.”
Wojnaroski said that while the work of many individuals, organizations and groups should be commended for their efforts to prevent child abuse, there are still far too many cases of the crime.
“Child abuse remains a nationwide epidemic despite the laws and enforcement lawmakers have set forth,” Wojnaroski said. “This resolution speaks of our continual commitment to our children through awareness, education and treatment.”
Cases of child abuse are reported across every economic and racial demographic across the country. In 2005, more than 22,800 cases of possible child abuse and neglect were investigated in the state. Of those, 4,390 cases were substantiated.
“While it’s a lofty goal, we cannot be satisfied until no children have to deal with abuse. Even one is too many,” Wojnaroski said.
