Wojnaroski: resolution names May Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month
HARRISBURG, May 6 – The state House of Representatives unanimously adopted a resolution authored by state Rep. Edward Wojnaroski Sr., D-Cambria, that names May as Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.
Wojnaroski said the high number of fatalities and accidents involving motorcycles motivated him to continue the annual effort to bring the issue to the forefront in May with this resolution (H.R. 711).
"In 2006, there were 185 motorcycle-related fatalities," Wojnaroski said. "By raising awareness of motorcycle safety, I hope we can reduce this number and make it safer for everyone on the road."
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, motorcycle-related incidents represented 13.1 percent of all fatal vehicle crashes in the state in 2006. That same year, motorcycles were involved in 3,889 crashes.
Wojnaroski said that groups such as the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program, the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Dealers Association and the Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education of Pennsylvania, or ABATE, support the resolution.
