Cambria County legislators to honor more than 1,000 WWII vets at ceremony

Residents invited to attend

JOHNSTOWN, May 6 – State Rep. Edward Wojnaroski Sr., D-Cambria, invites Cambria County residents to join him in honoring 1,017 World War II veterans later this month.

The Cambria County World War II Recognition Ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18 in the Cambria County War Memorial. The event is hosted by Wojnaroski, Reps. Gary Haluska and Tom Yewcic, Sen. John Wozniak and the Conemaugh Valley Veterans.

"This is going to be a tremendous event, with more than 1,000 WWII veterans signing up to attend," Wojnaroski said. "It's very humbling to know that Cambria County has so many who have answered this country's call to duty and I know county residents will turn out to see their veterans honored."

Each veteran will be presented with a medal and citation in recognition for their service and sacrifice. U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha will offer remarks and light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the event.

"This ceremony is a tribute to our veterans. It also will include music of the era, patriotic songs, a toast and benediction," Haluska said.

Yewcic said that since the event is so large, the street in front of the war memorial will be closed.

"We have taken safety into account by closing the road, allowing people to cross it safely. We will also be busing veterans in nursing homes to and from the event," Yewcic said.

While the program begins at 3 p.m., Wojnaroski asks veterans to arrive by 2 p.m. There will be plenty of volunteers, including current military members, as well as boy and girl scouts, on hand to help.

Wojnaroski said that the event is open to the public and members of the public do not need to RSVP.

"We are keeping a promise to our veterans that when we say 'never forget,' we mean never. I urge everyone to come out and show these soldiers - and today's soldiers - that the gratitude for their service will not diminish over time," Wozniak said.
