Barbin bill authorizes use of firefighter funds for emergency service training

HARRISBURG, July 2 – A bill sponsored by state Rep. Bryan Barbin, D-Cambria, that would allow relief funds to be used for emergency service and paramedic training, in addition to fire training, unanimously passed the state House today.

House Bill 810 would add a section to the Volunteer Firefighter’s Relief Association Act allowing for relief funds to be used for emergency medical service training. Act 84 of 1968, the Volunteer Firefighter’s Relief Association Act, allows for relief association funds to be used for a host of firefighter-related expenses including those incurred during firefighting training programs.

"Right now, those relief funds can only be used for bonafide firefighters' training schools," Barbin said. "This bill would allow funds to be used for emergency medical training or paramedic training."

The bill now goes to the Senate.
