Wojnaroski to receive lifetime achievement award from Arthritis Foundation

HARRISBURG, Sept. 22 – State Rep. Edward Wojnaroski Sr., D-Cambria, will be awarded the 2008 Gala Lifetime Achievement Award next month during the Arthritis Foundation's, Central Pennsylvania Chapter, annual event.

The gala, with the theme, Fishing for a Cure, will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10 in the Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center, 301 Napoleon St., Johnstown.

Wojnaroski, a 12-year member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, in December announced his retirement at the conclusion of this legislative session.

"It was a wonderful surprise to be selected for this honor," Wojnaroski said. "Helping those who live with arthritis and searching for a cure is a worthy effort, and one that I'm proud to be involved in. I know firsthand the effects of this disease as my wife has been struggling with this disease for about 10 years."

According to the Arthritis Foundation, Wojnaroski was selected for this honor for his continued support and advocacy for those living with arthritis and arthritis-related legislation throughout his tenure in the state House. Most recently, Wojnaroski helped to get state funding for arthritis programs reinserted into the 2008-09 state budget after it had been eliminated during negotiations. Wojnaroski also is a member of the Arthritis Caucus in the General Assembly.

"Throughout his tenure in public service, Representative Wojnaroski has quietly, meticulously, but powerfully offered support and a voice for those who needed it," said Douglas A. Knepp, co-interim executive director of the Arthritis Foundation's Central Pennsylvania Chapter.

"With quiet repose and unwavering commitment, he has touched so many lives in so many ways. The Arthritis Foundation, Central Pennsylvania Chapter, is honored to be one of those who have been touched by a hand of quiet greatness," Knepp said.

The black-tie optional gala will feature a dinner, guest speakers, silent auction/raffles and live entertainment by the Jimmy Lamb Trio. U.S. Rep. John Murtha is serving as honorary chairman. Tickets are available through the Arthritis Foundation, Central Pennsylvania Chapter, by calling toll free at 1-800-776-0746 through Oct. 1. Individuals can also register for the event online by visiting http://fishingforacure.kintera.org.

The Arthritis Foundation is the only nationwide, nonprofit health organization helping people take greater control of arthritis by leading efforts to prevent, control and cure arthritis and related diseases – the nation’s No. 1 cause of disability.
