State grant awarded to build wood pellet manufacturing plant in Johnstown

HARRISBURG, Oct. 21 – State Rep. Edward Wojnaroski Sr., D-Cambria, said that a company that manufactures wood pellets for home heating has been awarded a $500,000 grant to build a wood pellet manufacturing plant in Johnstown.

Wojnaroski said this project by First Nation Wood Pellets has the capability of creating 45 permanent full-time jobs in the area.

"Wood pellet stoves as a heating source is growing in popularity, especially as the cost of energy continues to rise. This new plant will have the capacity of manufacturing 78,000 tons of wood pellets a year. Pellet production equates to more than 9 million gallons of fuel oil annually and is environmentally friendly," Wojnaroski said.

The project calls for initial product shipments to begin by January 2009.

The grant was awarded by the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority.
