Applications now available for home heating assistance program
Wojnaroski urges families who need help with their heating bills to apply
HARRISBURG, Nov. 28 – State Rep. Edward Wojnaroski Sr., D-Cambria, announced that the state's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which offers residents help with heating costs, is now accepting applications.
LIHEAP is a state-administered program that helps low-income individuals and families pay for their home-heating bills. Families do not have to be on cash assistance to qualify for LIHEAP, and can receive assistance even if they have not missed a payment on a heating bill. No lien is placed on the home of people who receive LIHEAP benefits.
Eligibility for LIHEAP is based on household income and family size -- a family of four can qualify for LIHEAP if its household income is $30,975 or less.
"This is a valuable program and can make a difference for many families this winter," Wojnaroski said. "I encourage residents to check with my office to learn more about the program and see if LIHEAP can help them stay warm."
LIHEAP offers two types of grants. Cash grants of up to $300 are available to help families pay regular monthly heating bills. The amount of the grant depends on income, household size, type of heating fuel and region of the state. Crisis grants of up to $300 are also available to pay for heating emergencies such as a broken furnace or fuel shortage.
More detailed income eligibility guidelines, as well as additional information and LIHEAP applications -- which Wojnaroski's staff can help residents fill out -- are available in Wojnaroski's office at 413 Main St., or by calling 536-9818.
Residents can also access information online about LIHEAP, other energy assistance programs and energy saving tips at www.staywarmpa.com. Online applications for LIHEAP are available at this Web site: www.dpw.state.pa.us/ServicesPrograms/LIHEAP.
The deadline to apply for LIHEAP is March 21, 2008, or when funds have been depleted, whichever occurs first.
