Burns seeks candidates for new program at Pa. military college
HARRISBURG, March 18 – State Rep. Frank Burns, D-Cambria/Somerset, is currently seeking a worthy student from his legislative district for participation in the Valley Forge Military College Legislative Appointment Initiative.
In December, the Pennsylvania House adopted a resolution (H.R. 565) to recognize Valley Forge as Pennsylvania's official military college and create a legislative appointment program at the school. The program allows each state representative to select a student from his or her legislative district for enrollment in the freshman class at the school.
For the 2010-11 academic year, a student seeking admission into the legislative appointment program must have a minimum SAT score of 1000 or a 21 on the ACT and an overall high school grade-point average of 2.5. Candidates should also exhibit involvement in sports or other extracurricular activities, demonstrate leadership potential, and be service-oriented.
Students chosen to attend Valley Forge through the legislative appointment program will receive a $9,000 scholarship under the program. Burns said the school will also assist in facilitating other financial aid options.
Residents who would like to recommend a worthy student can contact Burns' Johnstown office at 814-536-8400. Burns said interested students can submit a short essay outlining their academic and extracurricular achievements and explaining why he or she wants and deserves to be appointed for the program. The deadline for submissions is April 1.
Founded in 1928, Valley Forge is a coeducational, two-year transfer college located in Wayne, about 15 miles west of Philadelphia.
