Haluska announces $7,475 grant for Wilmore flood control project

HARRISBURG, Jan. 13 – State Rep. Gary Haluska announced today that Wilmore will receive $7,475 in state funding to help maintain its flood protection project, which helps reduce flooding damage and related costs in the borough during storms and heavy rains.

The state grant from the Department of Environmental Protection will be used to remove stream sediment, fill in two large scour areas and remove debris.

"The flood control project reduces the chances that flooding will cause significant commercial or residential damage in the borough, and reduces the financial costs when flooding does occur," Haluska said. "The state funding is important for keeping the flood protection project maintained and operational."

Flood control grants are awarded by the state to municipal and county sponsors of existing flood protection projects. The grants cover up to 65 percent of the costs of project improvements and non-routine maintenance, in addition to up to 50 percent of the cost for specialized equipment to regularly maintain these projects.

Wilmore and other municipalities and counties in Pennsylvania are responsible for the long-term operation and maintenance of these projects, most of which were initially funded and constructed by the state and federal government.

Haluska said Pennsylvania has one of the most extensive flood protection programs in the nation, with more than 200 projects located throughout the state.
