$27,278 recycling grant awarded to Cambria County
HARRISBURG, March 2 – State Rep. Gary Haluska, D-Cambria, announced today that Cambria County has been awarded a $27,278 state recycling performance grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
Haluska said the grant amount is based on the county's population and the 3,476 tons of material recycled in the county during the 2007 calendar year.
The state's Recycling Performance Grant Program provides financial assistance to counties and municipalities each based on the amount of material they recycle, which helps to reduce the amount of waste going into Pennsylvania landfills and its impact on the environment.
"Recycling programs run by the county and municipalities also help to create a market for reusable materials," Haluska said. "This is good not only for the environment, but for the economy, as well. As the recycling and reuse industry grows, it creates jobs and reduces the amount of limited natural resources needed to produce materials that we use every day."
Haluska said there are approximately 3,800 recycling and reuse establishments in Pennsylvania providing more than 52,000 jobs. Annual sales for these businesses is about $20.6 billion, and they have an annual payroll of more than $2.2 billion.
"The performance grant program gives municipalities and counties an incentive to keep growing and improving their recycling efforts," he said.
