Assistance to Firefighters Grant applications due April 4

Rep. Haluska urges local fire and EMS departments to apply soon

PORTAGE, March 4 – State Rep. Gary Haluska, D-Cambria, is reminding local fire departments and ambulance services to apply for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.

"Applications for 2008 grants are due April 4, so there's a very small window for our fire and EMS departments to apply," Haluska said. "I encourage them all to apply as soon as possible."

The AFG is a $500 million program that awards grants to volunteer and professional fire departments and EMS organizations across the country. In 2007, $49 million from AFG was awarded to Pennsylvania fire and emergency services departments.

Departments can submit separate applications for two kinds of grants:

Departments can also submit applications for regional projects involving multiple organizations and jurisdictions. More information and applications are available online at www.firegrantsupport.com. A help desk also is available via e-mail at firegrants@dhs.gov or by calling 1-866-274-0960.
