Rep. George: Plan would enable quicker fixes to 21 county spans
HARRISBURG, May 22 – State Rep. Camille "Bud" George, D-74 of Clearfield County, today said 21 state bridges in Clearfield County would be repaired or replaced in the next three years under Gov. Edward G. Rendell’s "Rebuild Pennsylvania" initiative.
"The time to repair our transportation infrastructure is now," Rep. George said. "Interest rates are low, our economy could use a boost and the Commonwealth's credit rating is among the highest in the nation."
Under Rebuild Pennsylvania, an additional $200 million a year for 10 years would be invested in bridge repairs, enabling 1,145 bridges to be repaired or replaced. The debt would be repaid from the state’s Motor License Fund, and not the general fund.
Rep. George said Pennsylvania leads the nation with the most structurally deficient bridges – almost 6,000 – and Clearfield County leads the state in terms of percentage of structurally deficient bridges with more than 200 state and local bridges needing repairs.
"The cost – both to human safety and to the pocketbook – will only increase if we delay making this investment," Rep. George said.
The 21 Clearfield County bridges that would be repaired or replaced in the next three years are:
● SR 3011 over Bell Run in Penn Twp., replacement;
● SR 3014 over Snyder Run in Chest Twp., replacement;
● SR 4006 over East Branch Creek in Brady Twp., replacement;
● SR 4019 over Sandy Lick Creek in DuBois, replacement and highway restoration;
● PA 879 over Susquehanna River in Karthaus Twp., preservation;
● PA 53 over Moshannon Creek in Chester Hill, preservation;

● PA 830 over Wolf Run in Sandy Twp, replacement;
● PA 879 over Susquehanna River in Lawrence Twp., replacement;
● SR 1006 over I-80 in Lawrence Twp., preservation;

Rep. George said the Rebuild Pennsylvania proposal also would enable the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Bank to make below-market-rate loans to municipalities and transit agencies for repairs and upgrades to roads, bridges and transit facilities.
