Rep. George: Parents urged to apply for early learning program

HARRISBURG, June 13 – State Rep. Camille "Bud" George, D-74 of Clearfield County, is reminding parents of eligible 3- and 4-year-olds that applications for fall enrollments are now being accepted for Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts  -- pre-kindergarten programs targeting higher-risk pupils.

"A great start in education helps ensure future successes," Rep. George said. "The half-day and full-day programs offered through Pre-K Counts feature small class sizes, appropriate curricula and regular assessments."

The pre-kindergarten programs are offered through participating school districts, child-care centers, Head Start providers and licensed nursery schools.

Rep. George said that although some slots are filled, parents may call either the Cen-Clear Child Services in Philipsburg at 342-5678, ext. 2233; or the Children's Aid Society in Clearfield County at 765-2686 to inquire about opportunities.

Eligible families include those earning 300 percent or less of the Federal Poverty Level -- $63,600 for a family of four – English language learners and families of children with special needs. Children are eligible for Pre-K Counts from age 3 until they enter kindergarten.

Rep. George said the Clearfield County League on Social Services, Inc. provides free resource and referral services on childcare. The phone numbers for the league are 765-1546 or toll free at (1) 800 442-5807. Information about child-care programs also is available online at www.compass.state.pa.us/childcaresearch

"The 2008-09 budget includes proposals to bolster educational investments," Rep. George said. "Already more local school districts are either seeking to expand or start early education and care programs."
